A Salute To The Beautiful Journeys Of Women In Healthcare

RESPECT; Resilience, Equality, Self-recognition, Power, Entitlement, Courage, Tenacity; never came in platter for any women. They earned it with struggle and by stepping each stone that came along the path. From being nothing to become everything, every woman has her share of struggle. Today on world Women’s Day, Let’s celebrate some of those journeys and their remarkable contribution in the healthcare sectors.

THE PIONEERS IN THE WORLD OF MEDICINE:

Today the world of medicine opened a wide arm for women and has now accepted everyone with a shear love. The journey of this acceptance came through the resilience of Dr. Anandibai Gopal Joshi; the first Indian Women doctor. A fate played a roller-coaster ride with her since her childhood. Born in Marathi Chitpavan Brahmin, she got married at the age of nine and lost her child due to lack of medical care. That ignited the fire within her and she took a step in the world of medicine. After completing her basic education in India, she went to Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania to study modern medicine. The aim of this hardship, the tolerance, the challenges was to be the aid for every possible woman who is on the edge of the critical pregnancy. She came back to India and served her responsibilities when fate played another round of ride for her, and she lost her life just a year after due to Tuberculosis. Although the journey of one ended, many started soon after.

Dr. Kadambini Ganguly, had no less of a journey. Turning all the odds in a favor she not only became the first female doctor of Asia, but was also the first women speaker in Indian national congress and inspiration to many.

Dr. Thanjavur Santhanakrishnan Kanaka: A first female neurosurgeon and a lady with a vision ahead of a time. She is a pioneer of chronic electrode implantation techniques, also served as army doctor during India- China war. She bagged the position in Limca book of world records for the successful 139 blood donations.

Dr. V Shanta; a goddess of oncology and a Mother Teresa to the cancer patients for six decades. She devoted herself in the world of oncology and became not just a part but the root for many things including Medical and pediatric oncology section in cancer institute, which became the first in India. She is one of the few women to be awarded with all the three prestigious awards of India along with the 32 other awards from public and official organizations.

THE PIONEERS IN THE WORLD OF PHARMACEUTICAL BUSINESS:

Today’s women have spread her wings in all the industries. Women are believed to be the best managers, because it’s a gifted trait of a women to manage and plan things, and now they have recognized it to stand high, shoulder to shoulder with our leading men.

Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, chairman and managing director of Biocon India ltd. Born and brought up in a Gujrati family, she completed her education from top most institutes. Like any other person she faced rejections, because the job she was looking for was supposed to be the man’s work. She worked with Biocon ltd. as a trainee manager and came back to India and started her own joint venture Biocon India ltd. with just 10000 INR. Being a youngster, she had a hard time finding investors, employees, financers, vendors and what not. She not only surpassed these hurdles but made her company one of the leading pharmaceutical company of times.

Vinita Gupta, CEO Lupin and daughter of Desh Bandhu Gupta, Founder of Lupin. Although the entry in the world of business was easy for her, she took the charge in hands and grew the business 10 times more by hitting the right market and using the right strategies of United States.

Ameera Shah, MD and promotor of Metropolis healthcare, a lady behind the largest pathology chains of Pathology lab. Her father started the single pathology lab. It was her determination and hard work that she grew the single lab into multinational lab with a largest revenue of times. She also served as secretary of the Indian Association of Pathology Laboratories (IAPL) and co-chairperson of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Health Services Committee in 2012.

Dr. Sunita Maheshwari, Co-founder of Tetradiology Solutions. She is doctor by education and found her roots in clinical pathology. She also put her foot in AI technology and established Telrad tech. She has an active presence in social arena as well. She runs two social trusts, People4people and Telrad Foundation through which she has reached to many and been successful in making their lives a little better.

Women has inner strength, a determination, and ability to face whatever comes in way. Above journeys gives us a glimpse of same. Let’s take an inspiration from them and help our new generations achieve much more than they know.
